Sodium sulfite is a Inorganic compound. It is a white granular powder with a sulfur dioxide odor at room temperature, stable when dry, and sensitive to moisture. It is soluble in water and glycerol, insoluble in ethanol, and its aqueous solution is alkaline. Its aqueous solution is alkaline to litmus test paper and phenolphthalein, and reacts with acid to produce toxic sulfur dioxide gas. The pH of Chemicalbook 1% aqueous solution is 8.3-9.4, indicating strong reducibility. It decomposes into Sodium sulfide and sodium sulfate when heated, and gradually oxidizes into sodium sulfate when placed in air. In nature, there are three forms of anhydrous Sodium sulfite, Sodium sulfite heptahydrate and Sodium sulfite decahydrate, among which anhydrous Sodium sulfite is the most difficult to be oxidized.
Melting point: easily soluble in water
